Knowledge Forum

The AOSpine Knowledge Forum Tumor develops an evidence-based medicine model for rare and often neglected neoplastic conditions

The AOSpine Knowledge Forum (KF) Tumor has a keen interest in the clinical management and prognosis of primary spinal column tumors. Primary spinal column tumors are rare, heterogeneous, often aggressive and fatal, and have various treatment approaches. This group has developed a research strategy and model where the best available evidence is collected through an international collaborative network of spine oncology centers. It establishes treatment methods which improve patient survival and reduce morbidity with satisfactory quality of life.

Pioneering work through collaboration

The model consists of four stages: 1) planning, 2) recruitment, 3) retrospective collection/analysis, and 4) prospective collection. Stages 1 to 3 are complete, where a total of 1,495 tumors have been captured and diagnosed as one of 18 primary spinal column tumor histotypes. Data specific to each histotype is currently being analyzed and the outcomes are beginning to be disseminated at various international congresses and appear in well-known journals. One innovative and very exciting aspect of the retrospective analysis has been the linking of the clinical outcome of chordomas to their molecular analysis.  This pioneering work is established through collaboration with our pathologist colleagues in the molecular analysis of retrieved paraffin samples. Preliminary results our very encouraging in that specific genetic sequencing may predict prognosis and thus direct or modify treatment.

"It is only through rigorous investigation and multi-center collaborative efforts that we will be able to successfully develop new diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic methods for these patients. This model is allowing us to maximize our knowledge and is setting the stage to move prospectively, incorporating biobankingas a component." says Charles Fisher, Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and Chairman of the KF Tumor.

To learn more about the model, please read the manuscript which was recently published in the Journal of Neurosurgery on September 5, 2014 and listen to the featured JNS Weekly Podcast: September 5, 2014.

Current treatment options and considerations for aneurysmal bone cysts have already been published online in the Journal of Neuro-Oncology in the July 2014 issue.

Please stay tuned for more results on the other primary spinal column tumor histotypes in the coming months.

AOSpine Davos Courses

The power of choice

The AOSpine Davos Courses are offering participants an opportunity to individually tailor their course content depending on their specific clinical needs and wishes.  Participating surgeons are able to network with over 300 surgeons, with specialties across several pathologies, while still focusing on the topics which are most relevant to themselves and their careers.

This unique course concept was initially introduced at the Davos Courses in 2013 and was received with overwhelming praise and enthusiasm, from participants and faculty alike.

At the AOSpine Davos Courses 2014, the following ten, day-long, modules are on offer:

Case based learning

The AOSpine Davos Courses have a case-based educational format that is specifically created to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in their daily practice. The use of real cases is a very powerful learning tool and much of the teachings are focused on small group discussions.

Discussion groups allow participants to use a range of skills that help embed and apply new knowledge and understanding. These include thinking, reasoning, explaining, and problem solving. Sharing opinions with a group in a structured discussion is a great method for participants to increase their understanding by reflecting on their experiences.

Expert faculty members

AOSpine has invited 65 expert faculty members, from all around the world, to teach at the Davos Courses. The faculty team will guide the interactive learning experience and participants will benefit through close interactions and expert opinions.

AOSpine Journals

Major changes to Global Spine Journal and Evidence-Based Spine-Care Journal in 2015

We are very pleased to announce a number of major changes to the AOSpine journals taking effect in 2015.

The editors of Global Spine Journal and Evidence-Based Spine-Care Journal Dr Wang and Dr Chapman (respectively) are pleased to announce that in 2015 the titles will merge into a single publication, and will publish under the name Global Spine Journal.

Publishing six times each year, this move is being made as a reflection of the ever changing needs of the spine community and will allow us to focus resources into a single publication. Dr Jeff Wang shall continue in his role as Editor-in-Chief publishing papers devoted to the study and treatment of spinal disorders, including diagnosis, operative and non-operative treatment options, surgical techniques, and emerging research and clinical developments.

Dr J. Wang says, " I have been delighted to see the rapid growth, interest, and large number of submissions to the Global Spine Journal each month. I am impressed by the global origin of the research which aligns with our goals of making this a true international platform upon which authors from all over the world have the ability to interact in an academic forum. As our readership and society continues to grow, and being the official journal of AOSpine, publishing in our journal allows your work to be seen by our close to 30,000 members from all corners of the world."

The core content of Evidence-Based Spine-Care Journal, comparative studies of effectiveness providing accurate, concise presentations of information that can be grasped at-a-glance by busy spine surgeons, shall continue to be published in two special issues of Global Spine Journal each year, with Dr Chapman continuing to act as Editor-in-Chief of these issues.

Dr J. Chapman says, "Over its 5 year evolution starting as Evidence Based Spine Surgery (EBSS) towards its reincarnation as Evidence Based Spine-Care Journal (EBSJ) we have been blessed with terrific readership responses and great interest as expressed in our impressive hit rates of many of our articles. This has validated the concept of providing a dedicated focus on the foundational basis of clinical spine research through formal high value systematic reviews and also providing practical ‘how-to’ articles on paths towards conducting successful spine research. The integration of EBSJ into the larger Global Spine Journal umbrella will allow us to grow our readership further while concentrating our resources better on our path towards becoming one of the premier high-impact multispecialty scientific spine publications of the largest academic spine organization in the world."

This change will also coincide with the Global Spine Journal becoming an Open Access title. Meaning that all content will be freely available to everyone. In addition all papers will continue to be fully searchable through Pubmed immediately upon publication.

This is a very exciting move to the philosophy behind the AOSpine publishing strategy, ensuring that the journal content reaches the widest audience possible, fulfilling the foundation's aims of “furthering science, improving patients' lives, and advancing professional careers through the exchange of knowledge and professional networking”

Members of AOSpine will continue to receive a print subscription to the journal as a benefit of membership but in addition members can publish unlimited papers in the journal at no cost. A saving of $1,500 per paper published!

These changes are the first of a whole raft of innovations that will be coming to the journal in the coming months including a new tablet/mobile optimised viewing experience, a regular podcast series and best paper awards. Stay tuned for further announcements before the end of 2014.

We hope that you can join us as we enter this next phase of the journals life and invite you to submit your research and help support the Global Spine Journal.
