Mentorship Training in New York City
During the creation process of the scheme it was clear that mentors needed to receive some form of training in order for them to fulfil their role as mentor. With this in mind AOSpine International created an informal training environment. The key goal of the meeting was to set up the pairs with a clear plan for the scheme, however, emphasis was placed on giving effective feedback specifically in the mentor role as this was seen to be vital to the process.
The AOSpine Mentorship Education Scheme was launched in August with the first meeting of the mentor and mentee pairs.
AOSEC Chairperson Mike Grevitt and surgeon faculty Ted Choma created a hilarious role play situation showing all the worst ways to give feedback to a potential mentee. This went down very well with the group, who were not only entertained by this skit but also learnt valuable lessons in setting up communication and creating a suitable environment in which to be open and honest with their colleagues.
Other educational tools were discussed including the 7 Principles of Education:
Based on needs
Motivates
to learn
Promotes reflection
Interactive
Relevant
Leads to verifiable
outcomes
Provides
feedback
Discussing these principles showed the group how best to get the most of their tailor-made schemes.
AOSpine International will be following the progress of these first mentor and mentee pairs closely and hoping to improve on the scheme as it progresses. Future training opportunities for the mentors will be considered if they are required.
