AOPEER—designed by surgeons, for surgeons

AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER) offers surgeons and researchers tools to obtain training and experience in all phases of clinical research through online educational materials and face-to-face courses.

In 2018, new contents—a lecture on study design, an instructional video on informed consent and study conduct, an e-module on health economics, and a white paper on data protection—were published in AOPEER’s online platform.

In addition, 14 Principles of Clinical Research courses have been conducted in Egypt, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Oman, India, Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan, Zambia, Myanmar, Russia, Ghana, and Colombia. Level-2 courses on publication writing, study management, grant writing, and data management are at the end-stage of their development and shall be rolled out in 2019.

Roadmap to success beyond 2019

Information from Google Analytics indicates that 1279 new users have accessed AOPEER between June 1 and August 14, 2018. This volume speaks of the importance and the need of good clinical research education tools. During the AOPEER Task Force workshop in September to define the AOPEER aspiration for 2022/2023, research managers from the clinical divisions and specialists from the Education Institute brainstormed on questions such as “how to offer AOPEER to external participants?” and “how to make AOPEER financially self-sustainable?”. Workshop participants were motivated and encouraged from the resulting roadmap to success.
