 AOSpine Mentorship-Education

Call for applications for AOSpine Mentorship-Education closes in one week!

There is still time for young surgeons to apply for the new AOSpine Mentorship-Education with the application deadline being Friday November 13. Applicants must be paying AOSpine members (for a minimum of 2 years) and have attended at least two AOSpine educational events.

AOSpine is unique in its ability to facilitate networking between senior spine professionals and surgeons just starting out in the spine world, and this thought is what created the new mentorship initiative. With our community reaching all corners of the globe the opportunities made available to our members are second to none.

AOSpine Mentorship-Education focusses on pairing global key opinion leaders with less experienced professionals who can learn from their mentors on a one-to-one basis. The program is a long-term commitment and can last up to two years, with the intention being that the relationships formed between mentor and mentee will last long after the formal program has been completed.

Full criteria and all application documentation can be found on the AOSpine website.

Education

Germán Ochoa Traveling Fellowship

Last year AOSpine created the 'German Ochoa Traveling Fellowship' aimed at senior AOSpine surgeons with a desire to act as ambassadors promoting AOSpine as a global community and a leader in spinal education. The winner of last year's award has fully taken the ethos of this program to heart and is now planning to travel to his old fellows to spread the AOSpine word and learn from his colleagues. Dr Michael Janssen will be traveling to Guatemala, China and Trinidad.

In mid January 2016, Dr Janssen will travel to Guatemala and with the help of local surgeon Dr Bran, he will visit 5 local hospitals and host a one day 'AOSpine Seminar' with the local spine societies. The hospitals he will visit are:

  • Guatemalan Centro Medico
  • Herrera Llerandi Hospital
  • Sanatorio Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Guatemala
  • San Juan de Dios National Hospital
  • The Guatemalan Social Security Hospital

A similar program is being planned for Western China in February (Sichuan University) and in March, Dr Janssen will travel to Trinidad to work with Dr Dittmar and the local medical community.

The call for applications for this year's German Ochoa Traveling Fellowship is now open!

AO Surgery Reference

New AO Surgery Reference module launch

AO Surgery Reference is an online, step-by-step guide for the management of spinal pathologies. The detailed content is based on modern clinical principles, practices and existing evidence.

At the Davos Courses 2015, AOSpine is proud to launch the new AO Surgery Reference module on cervical spine, edited and authored by Carlo Bellabarba, Marcelo Gruenberg, F.C. Öner and Luiz Vialle.

The basis for this module is the new AOSpine cervical trauma classification, in which all types are presented and optimal treatments discussed. Furthermore, the module includes complete guidelines for cervical trauma assessment, including recommendations regarding imaging. The detailed surgical treatments include comprehensive information on approach, reduction techniques, anterior and posterior decompression as well as fixation systems.  In addition, special attention has been given to pediatric trauma and post traumatic deformity.

This is what the Editor Luiz Vialle has to say about the new module:

"This new module follows the successful Surgery Reference style- giving a step by step guidance to help you with your specific clinical case. From the classification to surgical procedure, the spine surgeon will find a variety of wise recommendations for a successful outcome".

Make sure you don't miss the new module launch on Wednesday, 16 December at 10:35 in Foyer C1 at the Davos Courses.

Global Spine Journal and Evidence-Based Spine-Care Journal merger update

In 2015, Global Spine Journal (GSJ) and Evidence-Based Spine-Care Journal (EBSJ) merged to become one publication, with GSJ publishing four regular issues per year and EBSJ publishing two special issues per year for a total of six issues. In 2016, the journals will be merged further meaning that instead of having GSJ and EBSJ published as separate issues, we are going to increase to eight total issues per year and have a special EBSJ section in each issue that features the unique content specific to EBSJ.

This decision was made after the decision to remove case reports from both GSJ & EBSJ in 2015. The space the case reports left open allowed for the opportunity to merge the journals together, creating one solidified journal with a more diverse content. This merge will also strengthen the issues overall and will make the journal more unique by containing the different articles that are specific to GSJ & EBSJ.

All submissions should be submitted to www.editorialmanager.com/gsj. All of your usernames and passwords will also remain the same.

Global Spine Journal is also proud to announce that it has been accepted for indexing in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, a new edition of Web of Science™ that further increases the visibility and reach of papers published in the journal.

All of us at Global Spine Journal and AOSpine are very excited about these changes and about the expansion of the journal. We look forward to receiving your submissions.

If you have any questions about submitting your manuscript, please email Managing Editor Danielle Lieberman at globalspinejournal@aospine.org.
